SUARAMUDA, SEMARANG – Miftah Maulana Habiburrahman or better known as Gus Miftah is currently being discussed by the public because of his behaviour in discrediting an iced tea seller so that it becomes viral on social media.
The incident occurred during a da’wah event held in Magelang. In the video excerpt circulating, Gus Miftah sat on stage as if making fun of the iced tea seller in front of the congregation in attendance.
Initially Gus Miftah asked about whether or not there was iced tea being sold to the congregation in attendance, but in between the questions he asked, there were harsh remarks thrown https://youtu.be/R0JDOWrzZGs?si=h3CcYghqJuvtQOSy banter that was thrown using Javanese language that could be considered rude.
Therefore, the iced tea seller felt hurt and did not expect that Gus Miftah would say that. The iced tea seller is known as Sunhaji who lives in Gesari Hamlet, Banyusari Village, Grabag District, Magelang Regency.
Instead of getting angry because of Gus Miftah’s remarks, Sunhaji was silent and patient. At the recitation event, Sunhaji had not received any money from the sale of iced tea and mineral water.
Reporting via TribunJakarta from the @sandaljepitanbarang account, Sunhaji is known to have only been selling ice tea for one year.
Sunhaji sells iced tea to be able to fulfil the needs of his two school-age children and his family. Sunhaji said that selling iced tea is uncertain in terms of profit.
Sunhaji once experienced an incident when selling iced tea for one day and one night only earned Rp.10,000. Sunhaji used to work as a carpenter. However, due to an accident that required him to quit, Sunhaji switched professions to selling iced tea and mineral water.
From the incident that is currently being discussed, many sympathise with Sunhaji and also many netizens feel angry and criticise Miftah for his remarks.
One of them came from Umar Hasibuan who criticised that Miftah Maulana’s jokes were not funny. The Apostle never taught to insult, bully, let alone say stupid.
His jokes are too much to insult people who are not capable. Not only Umar, Islah Bahrawi also participated in criticising Miftah Maulana, who said that the iced tea seller was doing jihad to provide for his family. Then Islah also prayed for Sunhaji that his degree would be exalted.
Behind the discrediting, Sunhaji received a lot of help from various parties. These include Erina Gundono who invited her Instagram followers to raise donations to build a house for Sunhaji, content creator Willie Salim who came directly to Sunhaji’s house to donate 100 million.
A businessman from Malang, East Java named Amar Suratie who offered free umrah, influencer Arif Nursalim who provided educational scholarships to his children, Abdul Muiz who is the head of the DIY GP Ansor Regional Leadership who appointed him an honorary member of the DIY Banser, and many more.
In addition, Miftah is known to be included in President Prabowo Subianto-Gibran’s Red and White Cabinet system. In the Cabinet, Miftah served as the President’s special envoy for Religious Harmony and Development of Religious Facilities.
For his remarks, Miftah received a reprimand from Major Teddy as the Cabinet Secretary. Miftah gave a leak about the reprimand given to him which outlined to be more careful in expressing opinions or speeches in public.
The reprimand given to him made it hotly discussed by netizens. Not only from Major Teddy, one of the political parties, namely the Gerindra Party, also participated in responding on its social media which was directed at Miftah Maulana.
The response he gave was to immediately apologise to the iced tea merchant because his actions were inversely proportional to President Prabowo’s principles.
After receiving a reprimand from Major Teddy, Miftah went to Sunhaji’s house in Magelang to apologise in person. Sunhaji accepted the apology and the matter was considered to be resolved amicably.
Sunhaji did not prolong this problem because Sunhaji did not feel revenge for Miftah’s words. In addition to the apology, Miftah Maulana also promised to give a recitation around Sunhaji’s house in mid-December 2024.

Miftah admitted that he was only joking, there was no particular intention, not only that his mistake and the incident were used as material for self-introspection to be more careful in speaking.

Miftah resigned from his position out of respect and love for President Prabowo Subianto. In response, President Prabowo appreciated Miftah’s resignation from his position. According to President Prabowo, his decision is a form of Miftah’s responsibility for what he has done to Sunhaji.
The decision that Miftah Maulana has made is a wise one. However, the actions that have gone viral on social media against an iced tea seller are not something that can be joked about.
Moreover, using language that Javanese people think seems rude. Joking is fine but don’t go too far. Moreover, joking about someone in terms of his throne or what he has. The life of one person with another is different.
There are those whose lives are fulfilled and vice versa. Some can buy all the contents in this world and some are the opposite. Even so, this life is not forever eternal.
Everything that is owned will be held accountable. What can be learned from the incident of Miftah Maulana is that when joking with anyone, you have to be careful.
Not all the words that are released are good for the listener to accept. So take care of the words that could hurt someone. Think first before saying it. (Red)
